The School of Life Sciences of Inner Mongolia University was established in December 1995, originated from Department of Biology which was established along with the foundation of Inner Mongolia University in 1957. At present, the school is comprised of Department of Biology, Department of Ecology, Department of Agronomy, Research Center for Laboratory Animal Science, Center for Biological Engineering, Research Institute for Natural Resources, Research Center for Mongolian Genetic Resources of Plateau Animal and Teaching Center for Experimental Biology.

Among 127 staff members, there are 102 academic faculty members working in both teaching and research, including 34 professors, 31 associate professors, 1 "Cheung Kong Scholars", 2 nominees of the “Hundred-thousand-ten thousands Expert Project”, and 3 nominees of the “New Century Supporting Program for Outstanding Personnel of the Ministry of Education of China”. There is also 1 Technology Innovation Team of Ministry of Education – the Team of Mammal Reproductive Biology and Biotechnology.

The school has 1 state-level key discipline (Zoology), 1 state-key-fostering discipline (Ecology), 1 key discipline of Autonomous Region (Biological Science), and 1 key construction and development discipline of “211 Project” of Inner Mongolia University (Grassland Ecology and Agricultural Biotechnology). The school has 2 Key Laboratories, the Key Laboratory of Inner Mongolia Grassland Ecology and the Key Laboratory of Mammal Reproductive Biology and Biotechnology, to be jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education of           China and the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The Laboratory of Mammal Reproductive Biology and Biotechnology is also the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Education, the Key Laboratory of Ministry of Agriculture and the Key Laboratory of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. 1 Key Laboratory of Forage and Specialty Crops Biotechnology, which is jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education of China and the People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region; 1 Key Laboratory of Well-bred Livestock Industrialized Breeding Technology Research Center of Ministry of Education of China (also known as Engberg Goat Breeding Engineering Research Center). The school also has 2 engineering research centers of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The school now has 2 post-doctorate working stations (Biological Science and Ecology), 2 first-level-discipline Ph. D degree and master degree authorization programs (Biological Science and Ecology), 1 first-level-discipline master degree authorization program (Grassland Science) as well as 1 master degree authorization program (Bio-engineering). The school has 7 undergraduate subjects, including Biological Science, Biotechnology, Bio-engineering, Ecology, Food Science and Engineering, Food Quality and Safety, and Horticulture. Together with the National Research and Training Base for Biology and the National Research Base for Life Science and Technology, the college also has 1 national-level experimental teaching center for undergraduates, 1 biotechnology specialists training model innovation experimental area of border ethnic region in biotechnology, 2 national-level featured subjects in Biological Science and Ecology, 1 national-level teaching group in Ecology, 2 autonomous-region-level teaching group in Ecology and Biology Field Practice Teaching Team. The college has 1 national-level quality course in Ecology, 1 national-level bilingual teaching model course in Molecular Biology, and 7 autonomous-region-level quality courses in Ecology, Biochemistry, Animal Biology and Experiments, Genetics, the Biology Field Practice Internship, Reproductive Biology and Genetic Engineering.

The school has largely focused on the research fields of grassland ecology and agricultural biotechnology, targeting to address the key issues of grassland resources, ecological environments and agricultural productions in northern China . After years of development, the school has formed six major research fields, which are mammal reproductive biology and biotechnology, grassland ecology and regional sustainable development, biotechnology of local forage and crops, the chemical resource utilization of medicinal plants, molecular regulation of the cell and tumors, Mongolian Plateau animal genetic resources protection and application. The school has made major achievements on several high-level original technological achievements and demonstration results for application, such as integration of key technologies of livestock breeding, cultivation of new varieties of good quality forage and specialty crops, grassland degradation prevention and degraded grassland ecological restoration. The school has become an important base to solve major scientific and technological problems and to cultivate high-level talents in the life science area for both Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and our country. Since establishment, the school has undertaken approximate 700 research projects including 70 national research projects (major or key projects such as “the national ‘863’ research plan”, “the ‘973’ research plan”, National Technology Support Program, Major transgenic special funds, etc.) with an total research budget of more than 600 million (RMB) from external funding resources.
